about

Spirits of Rhythm is an exploration of artists who inspire us.

Jazz is alive today. Not as a museum piece to be preserved, but as a living art form, to be explored and experienced. On the face of Count Basie lived the warm, subtle smile of a man who knew that his band was swinging and the audience was feeling good.

Basie knew that you don't have to play flashy in order to swing. You can hear it in his perfectly-placed piano comping- this was a man whose ego did not get in the way of the music. He was not averse to burning tempos or complex melodies, but always made sure that his band was grooving hard.

Moonshine Rhythm Club began as a gypsy jazz band, but Count Basie’s inescapable influence quickly snuck in. The steady pulse of Freddie Green’s rhythm guitar, the relaxed but solid bass, and the laid-way-back horn section- these things form the core of our sound. Putting this album together was a delightful opportunity for us to try and translate his tasty harmonies and signature groove into our small group.

"If you play a tune and a person don't tap their feet, don't play that tune!" -William "Count" Basie
